Icarus: The Telehandler Chosen for Work in the Béziers Area

Updated: Jun 28, 2022

The city of Bèziers, a picturesque French municipality located about 10km from the Mediterranean Sea and close to the borders of Spain, has recently allocated a considerable sum for the restoration and modernisation of its famous arena, which with a capacity of 13,096 seats hosts numerous events, including the Corrida (bull fights).

During any restoration, conservative rehabilitation or extraordinary maintenance work, there may be a number of obstacles that are not detected in the design phase.

Why are telehandlers ideal for the restoration of architectural heritage?

For these types of renovations, it is absolutely essential to utilise versatile machinery in order to optimise time and space, and to solve any unexpected events.

The first difficulty encountered during this project was due to the location of the construction site - the arena is located in the historic centre of Bèziers, an area that is not easily accessible for the execution of the project.

The second drawback depended on the structural and architectural characteristics of the building which complicated the handling of materials and machinery. The arena features architecture modeled on that of Spanish arenas - a circular amphitheatre with tiers surrounding the central space, where the show is staged. The top of the arena is surmounted by a covered portico and the only access point to the work area is the large portal that leads into the central space.

Thanks to their flexibility and reliability, telehandlers can replace forklifts, aerial platforms and cranes. Furthermore, the telescopic arm allows you to reach higher and further than forklifts, ensuring accessibility even on rough terrain, and diversification thanks to a wide range of accessories available.

Why the Icarus?

The DIECI range of telescopic handlers can be used with ease, ensuring a high level of safety standards so that the operator can work more efficiently.

In selecting the machinery to be used for the renovation of the Bèziers arena, the contractor and executor immediately identified the Icarus 40.17 telehandler.

Among DIECI's range of telescopic handlers, the Icarus one is one of the most suitable machines for work in the construction field.

The reasons that led the company to choose this model were:

  • Lifting height: can reach up to 16 meters in height.

  • Lifting capacity: can handle a maximum 4,000 kg of weight.

Inside the arena, the Icarus was used to move, transport and lift loads of materials, which included: timber, concrete, scaffolding, precious tiles, sand and water.

When operating in a dusty environment, the Icarus was the obvious choice. This model comes equipped with a separating pre-filter applied to the air filter, allowing greater efficiency and duration of the engine, preventing the ingestion of dust and abrasive particles.

Furthermore, a telehandler with a comfortable CAB and air conditioning / heating system, that can be upgraded on request was appropriate for working in the winter months.

About the Occitania Region

Occitania is considered one of the best tourist areas in Europe because of its rich culture, landscapes and activities.

Every year in August the Féria takes place in this locality, a traditional event that hosts bullfighting shows, music and dancing, attracting thousands of fans and tourists. These events generate a turnover of more than 200 million Euros in the region.

The city of Bèziers forms the end of the “Canal du Midi", a French artificial canal that connects the Garonne River to the Mediterranean Sea. It is famous for the Albigensian crusade against the Heretics in 1209 and represents a very important part of Occitan history.

There are many historic buildings and places of interest to visit in the town - the Church of Sainte-Medeleine, the Chapel of the Blue Penitents, the Theater and last but not least the Béziers arena. Every year the arena hosts both traditional and Occitan bullfights, which is tradition.

The use of the Icarus telehandler in the restoration of the Béziers arena makes DIECI telehandlers stand out from the rest - they helped contribute to the protection of Occitan history and culture.
